Budva — Sandy Riviera Beyond the Spa Gardens

An hour south of Herceg Novi's botanical terraces, the coastline transforms. The sheltered bay gives way to open Adriatic, and Budva appears — Montenegro's liveliest beach town, where 2,500 years of history meet a thoroughly modern summer scene. The contrast with Herceg Novi's meditative spa atmosphere is part of the appeal: morning mud treatment in Igalo, afternoon on Jaz Beach, evening in a Budva Old Town restaurant.

The drive from Herceg Novi takes you along the bay road to Kotor, through the tunnel at Trojica, and down the southern coast to Budva. With a rental car you can explore the entire riviera at your own rhythm, stopping at Sveti Stefan for photographs and Bečići for swimming.

Beaches

The Budva Riviera stretches for 21 kilometres, offering sand and pebble beaches along the open Adriatic:

  • Mogren: Two connected coves reached through a cliff tunnel, minutes from the Old Town walls — intimate and sheltered
  • Jaz: A wide sandy bay popular with locals and summer festival crowds, backed by green hillsides
  • Sveti Stefan: The iconic fortified islet visible from the coast road, with a public beach on the mainland side
  • Becici: A long stretch of fine sand once voted among Europe's most beautiful beaches — quieter than Budva proper

Old Town

Budva's Old Town is a compact walled peninsula of cobblestone streets, Venetian architecture, seventh-century churches, and a lively mix of restaurants and galleries. The Citadela fortress at the southern tip frames panoramic views of the coast and the island of Sveti Nikola. After the tranquil gardens of Herceg Novi, the energy of Budva's piazzas feels like stepping into a different country.

Day Trips from Budva

Just 6 km south, this photogenic fortified island village is now a luxury hotel, but the views from the road above are spectacular and free. The mainland beach is open to all visitors.

A 30-minute drive north through the Trojica tunnel brings you to Kotor and its UNESCO-listed medieval quarter — or continue along the bay road back toward Herceg Novi for the full circuit.

Head inland for the Lovćen mountain plateau and the Njegoš Mausoleum at 1,657 metres. On a clear day, the views stretch across four countries. The winding ascent from the coast is an experience in itself.

Getting Around

While Budva's Old Town rewards walking, a rental car is essential for reaching the riviera beaches, coastal villages, and inland viewpoints. Parking is available near the Old Town walls and at several public lots along the main road. In peak summer, arriving early in the morning guarantees the best spots.
