Podgorica — The Capital on Six Rivers
Most international flights into Montenegro land at Podgorica Airport (TGD), 9 km from the city centre. As the capital and largest city, Podgorica is home to around 170,000 residents and sits at the confluence of six rivers — the Morača, Ribnica, Zeta, Sitnica, Maréza, and Cijevna. The drive west to Herceg Novi takes approximately two hours through dramatic mountain scenery.
The city layers Ottoman footprint over medieval stone, communist-era functionalist blocks alongside contemporary glass towers. The Millennium Bridge has become a symbol of Podgorica's modern identity — a sweeping white pylon over the Morača that photographs beautifully at dusk.
Podgorica is Montenegro's cultural heart. Visitors who rush straight to the coast without pausing here miss the galleries, the riverside parks, and the warmth of a capital city that moves at its own unhurried pace.
What to See
Browse Italian fabric shops and local wine merchants in the Stara Varoš quarter. Visit Sat-Kula, the Ottoman clock tower, and the archaeological ruins at Duklja — a Roman city dating back two millennia. The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, completed in 2013, is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans.

Day Trips from Podgorica
Skadar Lake
One of the most beautiful lakes in southern Europe, straddling the Montenegro-Albania border as a National Park. Home to vast colonies of Dalmatian pelicans, the lake is the largest in the Balkans and reachable in 30 minutes from the capital. Boat tours weave through water lily channels past ancient island monasteries.
Danilovgrad
A quiet river town 30 minutes west of Podgorica, offering riverside swimming spots, galleries, and the nearby Zdrebaonik monastery. The Zeta valley setting is peaceful — a welcome contrast to the capital's bustle.
Zabljak
An alpine town in the Durmitor mountains at 1,500 metres, about 170 km north of Podgorica. Year-round appeal: skiing in winter, hiking the Tara Canyon rim, white-water rafting, and mountain biking through pine forests in summer.
