Car Hire at Podgorica Airport (TGD)

Podgorica Airport serves as Montenegro's principal gateway, handling the majority of international and budget-carrier flights. Each year more routes open as the country's tourism profile grows — though many visitors still combine a Podgorica arrival with a coastal transfer to the Herceg Novi Riviera.

The current terminal opened in 2006. The old terminal building now functions as an aviation history museum — a charming footnote for plane enthusiasts. The airport code TGD is a relic of the city's former name, Titograd.

Location & Distances

The airport lies 12 km south of Podgorica city centre.

  • Podgorica centre: 12 km (taxi approximately €10)
  • Herceg Novi: approximately 2 hours west
  • Budva: approximately 40 minutes
  • Žabljak (Durmitor): 170 km north

Flights & Airlines

Daily service to Belgrade year-round, with regular connections to Paris, Rome, Frankfurt, Vienna, Budapest, and Ljubljana. Seasonal routes expand the network considerably in summer. Budget carriers increasingly serve TGD, making Podgorica an affordable entry point for a Montenegrin road trip.

Airport Facilities

The terminal offers eight departure gates, two arrival gates, cafes, duty-free shopping, and over 25,000 square metres of parking. Despite its modest size, the airport has won the ACI Europe award for the best airport under one million passengers.

For travellers heading to the coast, the 2-hour drive to Herceg Novi crosses the Montenegrin interior — through the Morača river canyon, past mountain villages, and down to the bay. It is one of the most scenic airport-to-hotel transfers in Europe.
